Kalonzo Fires Back at Ruto Over Tuju Saga as Political Tensions Escalate

A fresh political standoff has erupted in Kenya following sharp remarks by William Ruto and a strong rebuttal from opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka over the controversial incident involving Raphael Tuju.

Ruto Dismisses “Abduction” Claims

Speaking during a development tour in Siaya County on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, President Ruto dismissed claims that Tuju had been abducted, instead alleging that the narrative was fabricated by opposition leaders.

He accused them of misleading Tuju and exploiting the situation for political mileage.

In his remarks, the president claimed Tuju had been advised to stage a disappearance and criticised those behind the claims, referring to them as “scavengers” taking advantage of a citizen’s misfortune.

Ruto emphasised that Tuju needed honest guidance rather than political manipulation, warning that such narratives erode public trust in leadership.

The head of state also expressed concern about what he termed a growing culture of misinformation in politics, urging leaders to prioritise truth and accountability over sensationalism.

Kalonzo Responds With Hospital Visit Details

Kalonzo Musyoka quickly responded, defending the opposition and disputing the president’s claims. In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, he revealed that he had visited Tuju at a Nairobi hospital alongside Eugene Wamalwa and advocate Ndegwa Njiru.

According to Kalonzo, Tuju was in critical condition and undergoing scans to assess potential spinal injuries.

He alleged that the injuries were sustained when police officers forcibly bundled Tuju into a Subaru vehicle.

He further described the situation as alarming, particularly noting that Tuju remained under police watch even while receiving treatment.

Kalonzo praised the hospital’s medical team for their professionalism and care, affirming that the opposition would continue to stand with Tuju until his full recovery.

“Prove It” — Kalonzo Challenges Ruto

In a strongly worded message directed at the president, Kalonzo challenged Ruto to demonstrate genuine concern if he truly considered Tuju a friend.

“William Ruto; you called us scavengers. If Tuju is truly your friend, prove it: stop the daylight land grab, respect his rights, and order the immediate withdrawal of police from his hospital room,” Kalonzo stated.

His remarks signaled a deepening rift between the government and opposition, with both sides presenting sharply contrasting accounts of the incident.

Tuju’s Disappearance Raises Questions

The controversy began on Sunday, March 23, 2026, when Tuju was reported missing under unclear and troubling circumstances.

The incident quickly sparked widespread speculation across the country, with different political factions offering conflicting explanations.

While the government has downplayed the abduction claims, opposition leaders insist that Tuju was a victim of forceful actions linked to ongoing disputes, including alleged land issues.
