Highly Educated MP With a Phd Facing Big Test as She Joins Governor Race

Irene Kasalu has officially set her sights on the Kitui Governor seat in the upcoming 2027 elections, signaling what promises to be a fiercely contested race in Kitui County.

Kasalu, who has represented Kitui as Women Representative since 2017, is positioning herself to challenge established political figures and veteran politicians in the county.

Among those expected to contend for the governorship is former Governor Charity Ngilu, who is seeking a political comeback after a five-year hiatus.

Also in the race is Senator Enoch Wambua, another prominent contender aiming to secure the county’s top seat and manage its resources post-2027.

Both Kasalu and Wambua share close political ties with Kalonzo Musyoka, making the Wiper Patriotic Front party ticket a critical factor in determining the likely winner.

Securing the party nomination is widely seen as offering a significant advantage in the general election.

Beyond her political career, Dr. Kasalu brings a strong academic and professional background to her gubernatorial bid.

She holds a PhD in Mathematics and Finance from the University of Leicester, a Master’s degree in Finance from the University of Nairobi, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics also from the University of Nairobi. She is further qualified with a Postgraduate Diploma in Actuarial Science from the same university.

Before entering politics, Kasalu built a robust academic career, serving as a lecturer at Meru University and previously at the University of Nairobi.

Her academic expertise and professional experience in finance and mathematics are expected to shape her governance agenda, particularly in areas related to fiscal management and development planning.

With multiple high-profile candidates in the race, the 2027 Kitui gubernatorial contest is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in the region.

Kasalu’s combination of political experience, party affiliation, and academic credentials positions her as a formidable contender in what is expected to be a tightly fought battle for the county’s leadership.
