Awkward Moment for Nandi Deputy Governor as Crowd Heckles Her During President Ruto’s Visit

An uncomfortable scene unfolded in Nandi County after the county’s Deputy Governor was heckled by residents while attempting to address a crowd during a public event attended by William Ruto.

The incident occurred on Thursday, March 12, when the president visited the region as part of his development tour aimed at engaging residents and inspecting government projects.

The tour included stops in Mosop and Kapsabet, where large crowds gathered to listen to leaders and witness the president’s engagements with the local community.

During one of the gatherings, Yulita Cheruiyot, the Deputy Governor of Nandi County, was handed a microphone by members of the organising team so that she could address the residents and introduce herself to the audience.

In an attempt to energise the crowd, Cheruiyot began by chanting popular political rally slogans such as “Kapsabet hoyee!” while also repeating phrases meant to excite the audience. However, the reaction from the crowd was far from what she expected.

Instead of responding with cheers, many people in the audience waved their hands and appeared uninterested in listening to her remarks.

Some members of the crowd signalled that they did not want her to continue speaking, creating a visibly tense moment at the event.

As the reaction grew stronger, the deputy governor appeared momentarily unsettled and eventually stepped away from the microphone without completing her speech.

The brief incident unfolded in the presence of the president and other leaders who were on the dais.

Videos of the moment quickly circulated on social media, with many users sharing clips and offering different interpretations of the crowd’s reaction.

While some described the scene as an embarrassing moment for the county leader, others argued that such reactions are common in political gatherings where crowds sometimes express their feelings openly.

A section of online commentators suggested that leaders must build stronger connections with local communities in order to earn their trust and attention during public engagements.

Others, however, urged Kenyans to treat leaders with respect even when expressing dissatisfaction.

President Ruto’s visit to Nandi County was part of a broader tour meant to highlight development projects, meet local leaders and interact with residents on issues affecting the region.

Incidents like the one involving the deputy governor reflect the unpredictable nature of political events, where public reactions can sometimes shift the tone of an otherwise carefully planned gathering.
