Under Radar? Malala Speaks After Being Accused Of Being a Mole In Rigathi Gachagua's DCP

Cleophas Malala has dismissed allegations that he is secretly working against Rigathi Gachagua within the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), saying the claims are baseless and politically motivated.

The former senator, who serves as the deputy party leader of DCP, was recently accused by Njeri Maina, the Woman Representative for Kirinyaga County, of plotting to weaken the party’s influence in the Mt Kenya region.

According to Maina, Malala had allegedly held meetings with several ward representatives in Kirinyaga with the intention of forming a breakaway faction within the party.

She further claimed that the move could benefit the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which is closely associated with William Ruto.

Maina also suggested that Malala was working with political figures linked to Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru, raising concerns that the actions could undermine Gachagua’s leadership and weaken DCP’s support base in the politically significant Mt Kenya region.

However, Malala strongly rejected the accusations, insisting that his recent engagements with local leaders were legitimate consultations aimed at strengthening the party.

In an indirect response to the allegations, Malala said the meetings he held with members of the county assembly from Kirinyaga were conducted with the full knowledge and approval of Gachagua.

He explained that the discussions were part of wider consultations meant to build unity within the party and prepare for future political contests.

“Yesterday evening, I had fruitful consultative engagements with elected members of the county assembly of Kirinyaga ahead of today's meeting with our Party Leader H.E Rigathi Gachagua,” Malala said.

He added that the party leadership was focused on expanding political inclusivity and building a strong foundation ahead of the next general election.

“We are focused on enhancing political inclusivity as we prepare for the forthcoming general election. Chama iko imara. We scatter none but gather all,” he stated.

The controversy emerged at a time when questions had been raised about Malala’s role within the party after he missed several key DCP events, including a strategy meeting held in Mombasa.

During that meeting, Gachagua led other party officials and lawmakers in reviewing the party’s progress and planning for the 2027 elections. Malala’s absence sparked speculation about possible internal disagreements.

However, Gachagua later clarified that Malala had been unwell and had taken time off to recover. He dismissed claims that the former senator was planning to defect or align himself with rival political parties.

The party leader maintained that Malala remained committed to DCP and continued to play an important role in strengthening the party as it prepares for the upcoming elections.
